Natropathic healing

ABRASIONS, BRUISES AND BURNS

ABRASION

Aloe is soothing and both anti-inflammatory and antibacterial. It helps to heal all kinds of wounds including abrasions. Use the pure gel right from the plant for topical application.

Calendula is anti-inflammatory, astringent and antiseptic. Calendula promotes new skin growth and stops bleeding. You can make an infusion of calendula steep it for 5 minutes then strain it and mix with 1 teaspoon of jojoba oil. Wipe it on the abrasion.

Using a cotton ball wipe a few drops of lavender oil on the abrasion.

Another really good essential oil is thyme. Wipe a couple of drops on the affected area with a cotton ball.

Tea tree is an antiseptic and an anti fungal. You can swab on a couple of drops to the affected area.

Bruises

Apply Comfrey tea as a compress on the bruise. This will prevent discoloration of skin and reduce the pain. Make the infusion and wet a small towel with it. Leave it on the affected area. Use as you would a cold compress.

Apply ice pack to the bruise. This will reduce pain and inflammation. Please do not try this remedy on broken skin.

Apply apple cider vinegar and cold water on the bruise in the form of a compress.

Burns

It really depends on what the burn it from

For a burn from lye use white vinegar. If you're declogging your sink or making soap always keep a bottle close by.

For a sunburn use aloe Vera. It has anti-inflammatory properties as well as healing properties.

If you get burned on the stove or some other kitchen burn keep the burned area under cold water. Do this immediately

The faster you get to cold water the faster the pain will stop.

Bug Bites, Hives and Itching

BUG BITES

Drying agents

Alcohol,

Witch hazel, or

Jewelweed vinegar

Plant material

Calendula

Jewelweed

Comfrey

Flax seed

Oatmeal

Mullein

Yarrow

Soak the herbs for about an hour in water or vinegar. the ratio should be 1 tablespoon  of herb to ½ cup water If you use vinegar you are all set if not add the infused water to the alcohol about 1 teaspoon of infusion to 1 teaspoon of drying agent. Swab on the bug bite and the itch should disappear. Also the mixture is antiseptic and fights infections.

HIVES

Make an infusion of basil by pouring 8 ounces of water on 1 teaspoon of basil. Wait until it cools. Swab this on the hives. Or you may use the aloe Vera plant if you have one.

Itching

A peppermint bath is a great remedy and will wake you up too. Take a tepid bath

Put 25 drops of peppermint essential oil in it and soak for a while.

Mix equal parts of honey and cinnamon and dab it on the area that itches.

Pour 2 cups of oatmeal in bath water and soak for a while.

Pour a cup of white vinegar in your bath water and soak for a while.

Poison Ivy

Oatmeal - Simply boil up the oatmeal in water as you normally would. Let it cool for a few minutes, then apply warm to the affected area, ideally, the mixture should be applied until a thick layer forms. It will harden as it dries. Most sufferers swear by this treatment, which is sometimes combined with a tablespoon or two of baking soda for extra relief from itch and oozing.

Baking soda - This treatment has also become a classic homemade cure, made by mixing 3 teaspoons of baking soda with 1 teaspoon of water until a thick paste forms. Apply to the rash and let dry. Another tried-and-true method for many poison ivy sufferers is full immersion in a soothing baking soda bath.

Vinegar - Just sprinkle liberally on rash or blisters for instant relief from itch.

COLDS, CONGESTION AND FLU

COMMON COLD

LEMON

Lemon is the most important among the many home remedies for common cold. It is beneficial in all types of cold with fever. Vitamin C-rich lemon juice increases body resistance and helps flush toxins. The juice of one lemon should be diluted in a glass of warm water, and a teaspoon of honey should be added to it. Take this once or twice daily.

GARLIC

Garlic has antiseptic properties. Making a Garlic Soup is easy. Boil three or four cloves of chopped garlic in a cup of water. The oil in the Garlic opens respiratory passages and helps flush toxins from the system that is what will bring down a fever. You can have this once a day. Or you can try five drops of garlic oil combined with a teaspoon of onion juice, mixed with 8 ounces of water. This may be taken 3 times a day.

GINGER

Ginger is another excellent remedy for colds and coughs. About 1/8 inch of ginger should be grated and boiled in a cup of water. Strain it and some sugar to taste drink it hot! Drink it twice a day!

COUGH DROPS

1 1/2 cups sugar

3/4 cup water

1/2 cup corn syrup

Herbal tea bag or assorted fresh herbs

Powdered sugar

Choose herbs like peppermint leaves, horehound, thyme, slippery elm, fennel, marshmallow, ginger, mullein and spearmint. Place the herb or herbs into some hot water.  Let the herbs steep for about 15 minutes or so. Strain the liquid and mix the infused water with the sugar and corn syrup in a sauce pan. Heat low until the sugar is completely dissolved. Then turn it up and bring this to a boil. It’s like making hard candy.

Use oil or cooking spray to coat a cookie sheets or candy molds. I prefer candy molds they are easy to get. Use a teaspoon to drop small amounts of the mixture onto the cookie sheet or fill small hard candy molds with the syrup mixture. Allow the cough drops to set, harden and cool completely before touching them. Place a few tablespoons of powdered sugar in a plastic bag. Toss the cough drops in the powdered sugar to coat them. I bought some wax papered sheets that will fit the cough drops. Store the cough drops in an airtight container for up to two months. Put a handful of them in plastic wrap or a small reseal able bag to share.

INFUSION REMEDIES FOR YOUR COUGH

The two types of cough are the dry cough, in which no sputum is evident. You should seek medical treatment if this is the case because it might be the sign of something far more serious than a cold.
